About the mascot...

The mascot is the Confederate Rebel, modeled in appearance after Colonel Reb, the mascot of the University of Mississippi.

The N.B. Forrest mascot was temporarily changed to the  character seen to the right but for only a few years. The Col. Reb based mascot "Confederate Rebel" is again the official mascot.

Facts about Colonel Reb:

Ole Miss historian David Sansing writes that Colonel Reb was modeled after a black man, Blind Jim Ivy. Ivy frequently attended athletic events at Ole Miss, and was considered the school's mascot for the early part of the 1900s.

The Colonel first appeared as a cheerleader mascot, on the field, in 1979.

Ole Miss changed its nickname in 1936, from "The Flood" to "Rebels."

The Ole Miss administration held a contest in 2003 to replace Colonel Reb as mascot. The final two choices received unfriendly reviews.
