2007 - 2008
School Year

May 2007
Our 2007-2008 FHS
Band History began a whole year ago this time (May) with
Color Guard, Drum Line, Drum Major, and Officer Tryouts.
June 2007
Then we dove
right in, over the summer, with Camp on June 18-22 for Color
Guard, Drum Line, Rookies, and Officers, which was followed
by a series of Monday night rehearsals preparing us for a
great Marching Season!
August 2007
On August
6th-10th we held our very successful Marching Camp by which
time we completed half of the show!
On August 17th our Percussion entertained at
Chick-fil-a.
Then on 23rd we had our Instrument Zoo helping many new
students select instruments, and on the 24th we began our
series of football games.
Juan Rollan, professional saxophone player, gave our Saxes a
clinic on the 29th, and we started our first AP Music Theory
classes that day.
September 2007
September 8th we
enjoyed
FSU Band Day, and on the 29th we played our hearts out
at
our BBQ.
October 2007
Then on October
9th we had our first visit by Band Legend Paula Thornton,
and we had a marching clinic by our outstanding Drill
Writer, Jason Duckett.
Then on October 13th we performed at the
Middleburg Competition where we received the following
awards:
Superior Drum Major.
On the following weekend, we marched at the
Fernandina Competition earning our way into Finals with
the following results:
2nd Place in class,
Superior with Distinction Drum Major,
Best in Class Drum Major
Best in Class Color Guard
7th place.
We inspired the school at our Homecoming Pep Rally on the
25th, and we enjoyed our performance and clinic by the
Symphony Brass Quintet on the 30th.
November 2007

November 3rd at Terry Parker High School, we marched our best
performance for the Florida Bandmasters Association Music
Performance Assessment, where we received an ‘Excellent’
rating. We received a Superior for General Effect and Color
Guard!

On the 9th Burk
Shields did a Low Brass clinic, and then we showed our
patriotism on the 12th marching in the
Veteran’s Day Parade.
On the 16th UNF Professor Marc Dicman finer tuned our
performance. Then on the 17th Skate Station featured our
fine Drum Line.
Symphony Trumpeter Cliff Newton clinicked our trumpet
section on the 20th.
We played for Sam’s on Black Friday. And Burk Shields taught
our Jazz Band on the 27th.
Eric Simmons and Forest Huggins were selected to Tri-State
Band on November 29th through December 2nd at FSU.
December 2007
How cool was it
to have the United States Navy Jazz Band perform for us in
our very own Band Room on December 3rd?! Then they played
through our
Jazz MPA music with our Jazz Band followed by
great sectionals.
On the 6th we had a wonderful variety show at our
Christmas Prism Concert. The Pep Band played at the
first of 3 basketball games on the 7th.
Then Matt Pickering and Forest Huggins played with Mr.
Staples at the
Tuba Christmas on the 8th.
On the 13th we played with the Jeff Davis Middle School Band
at their Christmas Concert, and on the 18th our Color Guard
sold Calendars at Chick-fil-a, while we had an ensemble
perform Christmas Carols.
Then on to 2008…
January 2008
On January 14th the River City Brass Quartet gave us quite a
nice performance, and on the 22nd Paula Thornton gave us a
tuning seminar.
World Class Tuba Player James Jenkins worked our Brass
Ensemble on January 24th through the 27th.
Lisa Parnell selected to the All District Band was clinicked
by the world-renowned educator Ken Williams.
On the 28th Cliff Newton returned to work on our Trumpet
Sound, articulation, and group performance.
Juan Rollan worked on saxophone tone and style on the 30th.
February 2008
Then on February
7th our outstanding
Jazz Band performed at the Jazz Music
Performance Assessment and was the only Jazz Band in the
county besides Douglas Anderson to earn a SUPERIOR rating!
On the 9th several of our students represented us at
FBA
Solo and Ensemble MPA at Fletcher High School with the
following students earning a rating of Excellent:
Kiara Collier, Matt Pickering, Rashad Woods, Shaunice
Johnson, Emily Howard, Amber Agustin, Brittney Wilcher, and
Sherese Green.
Earning the Highest rating possible, that of a Superior,
were:
Eric Simmons, Rashad Woods, Matt Pickering, Amanda Tillman,
Coddy Kent, Tony Yertzell, Danny Corker, Jill Van Lear,
Brianna Griffin, and Lisa Parnell.
Earning two Superiors each were:
Sabrina Lampp and Raquel Hernandez.
On February 11th Master Teacher and County Music Supervisor,
Dr. Ken Williams, taught us some concepts that will forever
change our band.
Paula Thornton worked our MPA Music on the 12th.
FCCJ Band Director Paul Weikle breathed life into our music
on the 15th.
We had an evening with Lee Ponder FBA President on the 21st
to rehearse our concert music.
Dr. Ken Williams gave us great wisdom on the 26th, while on
the 27th, the U.S. Navy Quintets, both Brass and Woodwind,
first performed for us then divided into sectionals giving
us individual instruction on the 28th.
March 2008
We stirred up the
troops on March 4th for the
FCAT Pep Rally.
Then, we raised all judges scores up one letter grade at
March 8th’s MPA.
Then, in a crazy fundraiser, we played Happy Birthday at
Shogun on March 15th.
On the 18th, we beat the Chorus in Academic Field Day!!
Then we were proudly selected to perform for the County’s
Band Directors in the Band After Dark experience on the
18th.
On the 26th we went to Jeff Davis Middle School to recruit.
Professional Percussionist Ben Adkins reworked our drummers
on the 26th.
Busch Gardens and Cypress Gardens will never be the same
after our visit on the 26th-28th.
April 2008
April 8th our
Jazz Combo entertained for Freshman Orientation.
On the 12th of April we played our instruments loud and
proud to inspire the successful sale of
BBQ.
“It’s the best PRISM concert I’ve ever been a part of!” said
Mr. Staples of our
Final PRISM Concert on the 24th.
We started our Cumulative test on the 28th, Part A, Part B,
and the infamous Part C...
Also on the 28th our percussion were given great hand and
sticking technique by Symphony Percussionist Tony Steve.
That afternoon the band took on the Chorus in the Athletic
Field Day soundly defeating them in kickball.
Then we gave it up for the
Wacky
Olympix , right Georgette? Roberto? Jill? But the Band
brought the victory home!!!
May 2008
May 1st we held our New Member Orientation. On the 2nd we
enjoyed Tchaikovsky at the Symphony.
We then hosted Jeb Stuart to clinic them on the 5th. On the
5th-7th we started all over again with selections for next
year’s Drum Line, Color Guard, Drum Major, and Officers.
But that’s not all…
We’ll still have lessons and tests on Dictation, Intervals,
Songwriting, Rudiments and Scales, Sight-Reading, Chord
Analysis, and next year’s Marching Show Music.
